Wilks ironing in snow goggles

Snow in London

Only a few days after I arrived, it snowed in London. Very pretty after all that rain, but it is slush in the morning when the gritters get to it. Strange to be trudging to the office through snow.

Pick the antipodean household outside taking photos of a little snow storm.

Snowy morning

Woke up to a snowy morning. For some reason rain is depressing but snow makes me happy.

It was a sign. The phone rang. It was mum. First time I've heard her voice in a few months. Then, only half an hour later, my sister calls. Great to hear from people, esp when I'm all alone in a cold house the day before Valentines.

The sun came out and I decided to go on a bike ride. But, about 10mins later, the sun decided it was just teasing me and the rain started. Then the snow. Then the wind. It was bloody cold and I was soaked to the skin. Powering on in the name of fitness and trimming down and feeling like NutriGrain girl. I've said it before, but it still amazes me, my jeans froze to my thighs. I had to pry them off with hot water. How do the locals do it?

Managed to take some snaps of the giant river gates thingys, which I thought would impress the boys. Looks cool. It is bloody big. No idea how it works.

It was just too cold so I decided to head back, when I came across this view of the mill, which looks close to the famous Dutch master painting (even if it isn't the same mill).

When I got back, the mill was open for tourists, so I went up. Notice that the sun is out. It didn't last.

Dolly Doctor

Casualties of childhood. The ones that didn't make it.Posted by Hello

Saturday - Amsterdam

Wandered about Joordan - the funky area of Amsterdam. It was a lot like Surry Hills, gay district with cool boutiques and offbeat shops. Kitsch Kitchen is the more famous, with nauseating bright colours and plastic tackarama. Like that line in The Simpsons' "The tragically ludicrous, the ludicrously tragic".

My favourite, of course, was the creepy Doll Doctor - which is like a mechanics workshop for dolls. Instead of engines and spark plugs, the place is full of doll limbs and doll heads. I sneaked some photos. Weirdly, the place is quite serious and people go in with their childhood Beloved Baby Mary-Sue or Inga and the "Doctor" assesses the damage under these giant magnifying glasses and some other specialised doll medical equipment. "Just as I thought, Luisa's arm was ripped out and then shoddily stuffed back in by your little brother. I'm going to have to amputate." Very weird. Reminds me of when I cut the hair off my Barbie.

The locals eat whole raw herrings. And you thought the Dutch were weird.
